Series EE savings bonds offer several advantages that are not readily apparent. In addition to elective Federal tax deferral and exemption from state income taxes, investors who hold Series EE bonds for 20 years are guaranteed by the U.S. Government to double their investment, meaning the effective rate of return can be far higher than the fixed rate to which the bond is otherwise entitled.
